Archangel Triptych I

Archangel triptych in black and white. Triptych of Saint Michael the Archangel. This digital artwork was inspired by a photograph that I took in Italy several years ago of a marble statue of Saint Michael the Archangel by the Italian Renaissance sculptor Raffaello da Montelupo, an apprentice of Michelangelo, in 1536. The statue, which was originally on the roof of the castle, is now located in an open courtyard inside the Castel Sant'angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel) in Rome, Italy. Originally built to house the tomb of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD130-139), the building has served as a prison, a military fortress, a papal residence in dangerous times (a passageway connects it to the Vatican), and now as a museum. Legend says the Archangel Michael appeared on the roof of the castle sheathing his sword as the plague ended in 590, hence its name.
