By the Sea: East Coast Beaches Boats & Lighthouses { 112 images } Created 6 Nov 2009

This gallery contains a sample of my photographs of boats, beaches, summer scenes and lighthouses from the East Coast and includes a changing collection of images from Coastal Maine, Cape Cod and the Islands, the Jersey Shore, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Florida beach towns. It includes both rights managed and royalty free images available to license as stock photographs. These are just a few of my photos.   • The Twin Lights Lighthouse, also known as the Navesink Lightstation, is located on the Navesink Highlands in Highlands, New Jersey, USA. The lights protect the coastal waters of New York Harbor and northern New Jersey.  The current lighthouse, designed by architect Joseph Lederle with two non-identical towers linked by keepers quarters and storage rooms, was built from local brownstone in 1862, replacing earlier buildings. Along with different sized towers, one tower light is fixed and the other tower has a light that flashes, making the structure easy for seafarers to identify.

  • Sankaty Head Light Lighthouse on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA wide-angle view across the moors in autumn. Built in 1850, the Sankaty Head Lighthouse was moved from the edge of an eroding bluff in 2007.

The light was automated in 1965 but Coast Guard personnel occupied the station until 1992. In 2007, the Sankaty Head Lighthouse was moved from the edge of an eroding bluff to its current location, 250 feet from the bluff's edge, near the fifth hole of the Sankaty Head Golf Course and overlooking the Nantucket moors. Sankaty, from the Indian "sankoty," means "highland.".

  • With Hurricane Sandy still a day away from reaching land in New England and along the Atlantic coast, clouds, wind and surf build up along the Connecticut shoreline in Niantic, CT. View from Main  Beach Pier at Black Point Beach Club looking out toward the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant. Much of the Connecticut coast suffered damage, including this beach, although the brunt of the storm hit futher south in New York and New Jersey. A gull seem oblivious to the rising waves.

  • Sheffield Island Lighthouse, Sheffield Island, Norwalk Connecticut USA, August 2013. The granite lighthouse was activated in 1868 and served the area until 1902 when it was replaced by the Greens Ledge Light.house. It was then used as a summer residence for many years by a private owner who purchased it from the government. The Norwalk Seaport Association purchased it in 1987; they maintain it as a historic site and run a ferry to the island between May and September.

  • New London, Connecticut, USA - July 9, 2012: Nine-year-old Amelia Baca greets her sister, United States Coast Guard 3rd Class Cadet Micaela Baca, at the pier at Fort Trumbull where the Coast Guard Barque Eagle, on which Cadet Baca has been training, is moored for the balance of OpSail 2012 CT which ends today with the various ships sailing back to their home ports. The Eagle's homeport is New London, Connecticut. Amelia, a triplet, came with her mother and two triplet brothers from their home in Lexington, Virginia to visit their sister the cadet.

  • Castle Hill Lighthouse at twilight during the golden hour just before sunset, Newport, Rhode Island, USA, Labor Day Weekend, September 2009. The beautiful granite tower, completed in 1890, is built right into the cliff face. The original beacon was a kerosene-powered fifth-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced in 1899, and again in 1957 by the current modern plastic lens when the last lighthouse keeper left and Castle Hill light was automated in 1957. With its red beacon, Castle Hill light house is still an active navigational aids for ships in Narragansett Bay heading toward Providence and Newport, RI. The lighthouse stands on land sold to the United States government for $1.00. Although the tower is not open to the public, you may walk right up to it across the cliffs.

  • The Mystic Seaport Lighthouse, built in 1966, is a full size replica of the Brant Point Lighthouse in Nantucket, Massachusetts, a harbor lighthouse and the shortest in New England. Though never an aid to navigation, it currently houses a fourth order Fresnel lens on loan from the United States Coast Guard. When you visit Mystic Connecticut, you can enter the lighthouse and watch two short videos about lighthouses. The US has more lighthouses than any other country in the world.
