Castle Hill Lighthouse at twilight during the golden hour just before sunset, Newport, Rhode Island, USA, Labor Day Weekend, September 2009. The beautiful granite tower, completed in 1890, is built right into the cliff face. The original beacon was a kerosene-powered fifth-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced in 1899, and again in 1957 by the current modern plastic lens when the last lighthouse keeper left and Castle Hill light was automated in 1957. With its red beacon, Castle Hill light house is still an active navigational aids for ships in Narragansett Bay heading toward Providence and Newport, RI. The lighthouse stands on land sold to the United States government for $1.00. Although the tower is not open to the public, you may walk right up to it across the cliffs.
