Adorable Lego minifigure young boy with a newspaper pirate hat and sword sits on a jetty with his pet dog and parrot watching his sailboat fleet in a pond.
A charming scene for children to hang in their bedroom or playroom or for those who are young at heart. Part of a series with this minifigure and his dog taken both outdoors in the summer sunshine and indoors with them discovering the sword in the attic (inspired by real life - read on!).
I photographed this series for a challenge in a Lego photography group for AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego) that I joined about a year ago when I first became interested in toy photography.
I did not have any Lego pirate themed mini figures, so I experimented with tiny pieces of newspaper, adapting instructions I found for a homemade pirate hat, and I found the play sword among the some old toys up in my own attic, along with the parrot. Happily for my grandson, I had already given him whatever Legos of my daughter’s I had not donated years ago, so I am building my collection from scratch.
At six years old, my grandson is a much better builder than I am. His joy in building Legos is contagious and made me realize that the infinite scenarios you can make with bricks and minifigures would provide endless photo possibilities.
My little pirate sits on a brick built dock which I modified from a Cozy House set that some Lego group members suggested I buy as a quick way to get some more pieces, since my collection is very small. The sailboats, cleverly made from a handful of bricks, are from that set. I also bought some second hand minifigure parts with bathing suits, intending to set up some summer themed scenes. When the pirate theme challenge came up, I added the paper hat and voila - an instant pirate!
Working outdoors gave me great dappled sunlight which is evident in this overhead shot.
Please check out all of the photos in this series. I hope they make you smile!
