Discovery of a magic sword. Lego minifigure child with a homemade newspaper pirate hat reaches for a magical glowing pirate sword. His faithful puppy dog looks on.
The first in a series of fantasy pirate themed images, perfect for young children and the young at heart. The series finds him discovering the sword, then outdoors sailing a fleet of homemade Lego sailboats.
A pirate challenge in a Lego photography group for AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego), which I joined when I first got interested in toy photography, spurred me to photograph this series.
Growing up as a girl in the 1960s, I was told Legos were for boys. My own daughter had plenty to build with and playing Legos with my grandson years later sparked my interest in toy photography.
Having given my grandson my daughter's old Legos, I am building my collection from scratch, buying my first minifigures in mid-2023.
Not having a pirate ship nor any official pirates for the challenge, I used a scrap of newspaper to make a pirate hat for this cute little guy and I actually found him a (non-Lego) sword among the detritus of old toys in my own attic, inspiring his discovery.
This new hobby is a great creative outlet. We all hit a creative rut at times, and I find that doing something else creative helps me get that mojo back. Simply building the scenes nourishes my imagination.
Play isn't just healthy for kids. We grownups can learn from it too.
