Close up view of petroglyphs in Petroglyph Canyon, Valley of Fire State Park, Mountain Springs, Nevada, February 2015. The petroglyph is carved through the desert varnish on the surface of the stone so the red rock of the Aztec sandstone below shines through. It is believed the earliest were carved by the Basketmaker people over 2,500 years ago, followed by the Anasazi, the ancient Pueblo culture, and the Paiute.
